Congress Unites with Faith Leaders in Prayer Tonight
In a beautiful display of humility and unity, the House Freedom Caucus and the Family Research Council are gathering in our nation’s capital, joined by pastors, civil leaders, and believers, to pray for America. Our country is in desperate need of divine guidance, and this moment, above all others, calls us to seek His face.
For Liberty and Justice carries a distinct heartbeat: our mission is not political, it is spiritual. That same truth was echoed by Tony Perkins, President of the Family Research Council, who said, “Our nation faces not just a political problem, but a spiritual one.” It is remarkable how the Holy Spirit aligns hearts. Though we have yet to meet Tony Perkins personally, he carries the same spiritual posture that defines our own: unity under God.
This powerful moment in Washington reminds us of our beginnings. On September 7, 1774, Reverend Jacob Duché was called to lead the very first prayer before the Continental Congress. In that sacred gathering stood George Washington, Patrick Henry, Samuel Adams, John Adams, John Jay, and many of our most revered Founders.
America’s birth was steeped in prayer, fasting, and solemn assemblies; times when leaders bowed before Almighty God with pure hearts and reverent awe.
Yet today, we live in an age that mirrors the warning of Romans 1:29–30: “…being filled with all unrighteousness, wickedness, greed, evil; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, malice; they are gossips, slanderers, haters of God, insolent, arrogant, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents…”
A nation cannot expect to retain the blessings of God while embracing and celebrating sin. John Adams declared in 1798 that “our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people.” That truth still stands. If America is to endure, she must once again become a people of righteousness and repentance.
Many believe we are witnessing the stirrings of revival across this land, a movement that may well be the next Great Awakening. God is calling His people to a deeper posture of the heart: to know Him intimately, to step boldly beyond comfort, and to intercede for our nation with conviction and faith.
That is what tonight is about, petitioning heaven for mercy, renewal, and divine direction. May our prayers rise like incense before the throne of grace, and may God hear from heaven and heal our land.
