The State of the Union: Wins to Celebrate, Renewal Needed

On Monday, President Trump delivered his State of the Union address before Congress. In Trump fashion, the president presented to the American people a list of wins that his administration has successfully achieved on behalf of the nation, celebrating what he calls the “Golden Age” for America. Some of those wins include lower housing prices, a strengthened border which has admitted “zero” illegal immigrants, strong law enforcement across the nation, and securing the largest tax cuts in American history.

President Trump’s accomplishments are certainly great. There is no doubt that he has helped the economy. We are also grateful for his successful efforts to ban DEI (diversity, equity, and inclusion), which have created a deep divide in our public schools. We ought to be grateful for the wonderful work he has put into making America great again.

But our nation still needs work, and legislative priorities will not fix our problems.

The truth is that politics can restrain evil, but it cannot transform the human heart. A strong economy cannot redeem people. A secure border cannot restore moral clarity. And no presidential administration, no matter how successful, can substitute for the responsibility God has given to His people.

One of the most striking aspects of the speech was not simply the policy victories Trump highlighted, but the contrast it revealed. President Trump repeatedly emphasized positions that are overwhelmingly popular with the American public, such as protecting women’s sports, honoring American heroes, strengthening national security, and securing the border. Yet many members of the opposition refused even to stand in support of these broadly shared values. The result was a stark visual moment: a president calling attention to ideas that unite most Americans, while his opponents sat silently in protest.

For many viewers, this moment exposed something deeper than political disagreement. It revealed the growing cultural divide within the nation. Issues that once would have drawn bipartisan applause, honoring victims, celebrating heroes, affirming basic truths about human nature, now expose how fractured our national consensus has become.

Christians should recognize both the opportunity and the warning in moments like this. On the one hand, we should give thanks for policies that restrain injustice and promote order. Scripture reminds us that governing authorities are ministers of God for good, tasked with restraining wrongdoing and rewarding what is right. When leaders enact policies that protect families, defend the rule of law, and preserve moral sanity, gratitude is appropriate.

But gratitude must never become complacency.

Political victories can create breathing room, but they do not win the deeper battle for the soul of a nation. Laws may influence behavior, yet culture ultimately shapes the direction of those laws. If the moral foundation of a society erodes, no number of legislative successes will preserve it for long.

For Christians, this means the task ahead is larger than celebrating political wins. We must rebuild the moral and spiritual foundations of our communities. That means discipling families, teaching truth to the next generation, strengthening churches, and living boldly in public life without fear. The State of the Union may tell us something about the condition of our government. But the true state of the union will always depend on the character of its people.

If America is to experience a genuine renewal, it will not come merely through elections or policies. It will come when men and women once again recognize that liberty, virtue, and faith must walk together. Political leadership can point the nation in a better direction, but it is the responsibility of citizens, and especially Christians, to carry that work forward.

Signer of the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution said in a lecture many years ago:

“Peace walks serene and unalarmed over all the unmolested regions- while liberty, virtue, and religion go hand in hand, harmoniously, protecting, enlivening, and exalting all! Happy country! May thy happiness be perpetual!”

That happiness can be perpetual, but only if the Church stands for righteousness in government.
